It is always good to keep a check on the level of cholesterol in your body. This is particularly required when you cross the age of 40. It is then that the heart becomes weak and there are more chances of developing one of more heart diseases. There is a simple way to make sure that the level of cholesterol in your body is within the permissible limits. You can carry out a simple blood test to determine the level of cholesterol in your body.

There are two schools of thought as to whether your cholesterol reading is normal or not. The first one looks at the total blood cholesterol levels and the other one looks at the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol. Low Density Lipoprotein cholesterol, or LDL, is known as bad cholesterol as it can get deposited in the arteries leading to atherosclerosis. High Density Lipoprotein cholesterol, or HDL, is known as bad cholesterol as it takes the cholesterol from the heart to the liver for use or for excretion. When there is too much of LDL cholesterol in the body, it leads to formation of plaques in the arteries in the heart which can lead to a heart attack. When these plaques burst, it can lead to the formation of a blood clot in the artery.

Therefore, you should have healthy cholesterol levels in your body. Usually your blood test will show what your cholesterol readings are. However, you can ask your doctor what are normal readings. Generally, having less than 200 mg/dl of total cholesterol or less than 130 mg/dl of LDL cholesterol is considered normal. Such people will have a less risk of developing heart diseases.
